“Assurance of Forgiveness”

I John 2:12a says, “I have written unto little children (Teknion= infants, babes) that you may know that your sins are forgiven for His name’s sake.” When you begin your spiritual journey; one of the most important milestones you need to settle in your heart is that you have been forgiven of all your past, present and even future sins. Satan will bring accusation against you saying, “See, you still act like you did before!” Or “What you did was so bad God can’t forgive you!” He holds it over us with guilt and shame and keeps us in slavery to our past. But Jesus has taken all of our sins and paid for them in full and has removed them forever. He wants you to have an assurance that you will not be held responsible for your sins and God will not condemn you.

There is a little homey illustration about a couple of grandchildren named Billy and Sally who were staying at their grandparents house which had many wooded acres near a lake. Billy had received a new wrist rocket sling-shot that he was anxious to try out. When he got there, he immediately set out and practiced trying to hit squirrels, chipmunks, etc., but to no avail. After several hours in the woods of not hitting anything, he made his way back to the house. As he approached the back porch, he spied Grandma's pet duck. On a whim, he took out a stone and aimed, thinking he would miss as before, but this one hit its mark and killed the duck!

He panicked! Looking this way and that he didn't see anybody around and quickly took the ducks body and out of guilt buried it in the woodpile. Thinking he was free from his crime, he looked up and there was Sally who saw the whole thing, but didn't say a word. Through the week Billy and Sally had to do chores before they could do fun things. But every time Sally had to do her chores, she would say to her grandparents, "That is okay, Billy said that he would do them; Isn't that right Billy? And then she would whisper to him, "Remember the duck."

This would go on for days where Billy had to do Sally's bidding or else she would expose his shame and guilt. Finally, Billy couldn't take it any longer and cried out to grandma and confessed his crime. What was amazing is that grandma saw the whole thing and was ready to forgive Billy. She was wondering how long Billy was going to let Sally make him her slave! Jesus knows that we have sinned and that we are burdened with guilt but He has forgiven us our sins and has taken the guilt and shame. We have the assurance of forgiveness.

Ephesians 1:7-8 "In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace..."
