The navigators had an illustration with your hand which I have tweaked differently to help you get a grip on the word of God. If you look at this chart which you can download off the website, it is a hand showing the way we learn and what we retain.

Our thumb is the first half of our grip; this represents meditation. Meditation is when we think about something over and over again. We ask ourselves, ‘Why does this matter to me?’ or ‘How can this be applied to my life?’
Then the second half of our grip involves our four remaining fingers. The little finger, the smallest is where we hear and/or read the word of God. We will retain 5-10% of what we hear. (Grip Bible with thumb and little finger only. It is easy to pull away.) This is how we start with faith.
The ring finger is what we call the study finger. We are reading God’s word but we are asking questions. We employ 6 honest men; Who, What, Where, When, Why and How. These questions help us to understand the meaning of what we are reading and hearing. We will retain 30-50% of what we learn. (Grip Bible with thumb and first two fingers. Little tougher to pull away.)
Next is the tallest finger, the middle finger is for memorization. We take one verse after we have read and studied it and commit it to memory. We rehearse it over and over again until it goes from short term memory to long term memory. This helps us to retain 80-90% of what we read and study. (Quote verse memorized 42 years ago I Cor. 10:13) (Grip Bible with thumb and three fingers now; wow! Getting much better).
The fourth and final finger is the trigger finger. This is where we take the first three fingers of our learning, and we load it like a gun to fire bullets of wisdom to someone else. (make a makeshift gun with hand) When you teach someone else you will retain 90-97%. (Grip Bible with thumb and four fingers. This is the best grip on God’s word! Colossians 3:16a says, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, in all wisdom, as you teach and admonish one another….” Do you have a grip on God’s word? Let’s get started!
