“Believe or Trust?”

There are two stages to our believing: one, is that when we hear about something and we choose to believe that it exists, they call this a mental assent; the other is we choose to trust in that something that exists. When it comes to God and His Son Jesus and the work of the Holy Spirit, it is not enough that you believe that they exist. In James 2:10 “You believe there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe and tremble.” They believe God exists but they are not trusting Him for anything.

The Greek word “pistos” means to “believe so as to entrust yourself to the care of another.” When we hear about the work of Jesus on the cross in the Bible, we are to believe that He existed and then we are to entrust ourselves to the work of saving us from our sins.

The great tightrope walker Charles Blondin use to put on shows for spectators at Niagara Falls. The crowds believed that he could walk across a stretched high-wire. They even believed he could walk across with a wheelbarrow carrying a person! But when Blondin said, "Who wants to be first?" There was silence.

When we learn about having a relationship with God and what Christ has done to secure that relationship for us, we must not only believe that He has done it (mental assent) but entrust ourselves to Him. We need to get in the wheelbarrow! The only difference between Blondin’s offer and Christ's is that Jesus guarantees and assures our safe passage. We will not fall because we are safe in the hands of the Father and His Son!

John 5:24 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.”
